I'm determined to get caught up on blogging. If you knew how many weddings and shoots I was behind you'd either laugh or have a new level of respect for me. Probably laugh though. Last New Year's Eve was spent in Atlanta shooting the out-of-control-awesome wedding/vow renewal of Ami and Scott. They had a beautifully intimate celebration and I'm so glad Jessica brought me along!

If you remember from the rehearsal images at Turner Field I shot film that week. It was a lot of fun. I love choosing in the moment whether to shoot in black and white or color. Shooting black and white in camera has always annoyed me in digital. I always wonder if I would have liked the shot better in color so I just don't do it. With film its different, I love black and white film so much I never think that. On to the images.

I love these first few of Ami right after getting dressed.

atlantaWD07.jpg I love this series right before Ami heads down the aisle!

atlantaWD09.jpg

atlantaWD10.jpg During the cocktail hour they had blackjack tables set up. So fun!

atlantaWD11.jpg Ahhhh details. This wedding was FULL of amazing details. The two long tables might have been the best I've ever seen. Just amazing.

atlantaWD12.jpg

atlantaWD13.jpg I love black and white film so much. It even makes the table shots interesting.

atlantaWD14.jpg Ami and Scott hired professional dancers to entertain during dinner and to teach the guests during the dancing, it was such a hit.

atlantaWD16.jpg Ami and her dad. Love his expression.

atlantaWD17.jpg This little series was during the same day edit the videographers showed. It was awesome and got some great reactions from the couple.

atlantaWD18.jpg Happy New Year!

I love love love all of the shots, but especially the first two b&w close ups of the details of her dress/shoes. It shows there is NOTHING like film. You've inspired me to use film for my wedding shoot this weekend. Wonderful images. Kristen

michael - i am absolutely IN LOVE with all of them. thank you so much for including so many shots of our friends and family and the same-day-edit series is just fantastic! my mom, by the way, already loves you but is going to love you even more for those three of me before i head into the ceremony. :)

I love the the B&W pics. I especially like the noise on the first few; are you shooting with Nikon or Canon?

ok. really. I want to take a workshop, meet you, something. you amaze me. a true photographer... you know how to use film (i can say i don't). that long aisle shot is so so beautiful. I also love the one where Ami turns and looks at the camera just before heading down the stairs. The light in the window color shots is perfect. Should i go on and on. ps - i still need to have some "engagement" type photos done. i did the avatar ones already while you were booked.

This is the longest post ever. Brittany and Taylor are some of my closest friends and I was so honored to have shot their wedding a few weeks ago. I've known Brittany since she was in third or fourth grade so shooting her wedding was a little surreal.

Summer, the bride's sister did all of the florals and really designed the whole wedding. She's incredibly talented and when she has a website up I'll post it up here.

Because the wedding was in December we had a VERY small amount of daylight so I called my friend Brian Khang, who graciously came out to help me shoot the ceremony and reception details. So if you're wondering where all the normal details are, they're right here on his blog.

Here comes the deluge of images.

This is what December in the OC looks like:

brittandtay08.jpg It makes my job easy when the wedding party looks like this:

brittandtay12.jpg

brittandtay13.jpg The guys were ok too:

brittandtay14.jpg The ceremony was held at St. Mark's Presbyterian Church in Newport Beach. It was actually a really cool church, inside and out. Because of the short day we shot all of the portraits there as well and I could have shot there for another couple hours. Really cool place. brittandtay15.jpg

brittandtay16.jpg

brittandtay17.jpg I love this image of Britt and her dad right before the walked into the ceremony:

brittandtay33.jpg I love these images of the first dance:

brittandtay35.jpg And this might be my favorite dancing shot I've ever taken:

brittandtay36.jpg

brittandtay37.jpg Our good friend Whitney doing her best Beyonce impression:

brittandtay38.jpg

brittandtay39.jpg You might recognize the couple in the middle square here. Its Trever and Brooke. I was a groomsman in their wedding last July. I also shot a few portraits of them. You can see them here. Brooke is Brittany's sister.

brittandtay40.jpg

brittandtay41.jpg I'm bringing back the animated gif. I loved this series so much I had to do it this way!

brittandtay42.gif Sparklers are never a bad way to end the night!

brittandtay43.jpg This was actually a little nerve wracking as a photographer. The only light I had was the sparklers and while they put of a good amount of light my shutter speed was still pretty low to freeze any motion. I shot these with the 35 1.4 at f2.0 so that I'd have a little wiggle room with the depth of field and at ISO1600 but my shutter speed was still at about 1/60th of a second... not fast enough for action. Because I shoot RAW I knew I could bring up the exposure a stop and not kill the image so intentionally underexposed the image a stop and shot it at 1/125th which froze a majority of the motion. In fact I actually like the little bit of motion blur there is. It adds to the feeling of movement and excitement in the images... at least for me.

brittandtay44.jpg

brittandtay45.jpg This is one of my favorite images I've ever taken.

Last week Mark Brooke and I went to Atlanta to shoot a wedding with our good friend Jessica Claire. The bride was Ami, of the wedding superblog, Elizabeth Anne Designs. They had the rehearsal dinner at Turner field and being a lifelong Braves fan I couldn't have been happier. We took a couple of hours before the dinner and shot some portraits of the couple around the stadium. It was a blast.

One of the things that made it even more fun for me was shooting film all week. I didn't take out my digital camera once. These images are straight from the camera, nothing was done in photoshop other than resizing them for the web. In reality I would probably do some dodging and burning but there is something about film that makes all of the things I would do to it if it were digital not matter. The lab I got them processed at did some auto corrections on the scans which I'm not super happy with but for the most part I love the way they look and I'll definitely be shooting more film at my own weddings. For those that care, the color film I shot that day was Fuji Pro400H and the black and white was Kodak TMAX3200.

My partners in crime for the week.

film sucks! ;-) great shots, but i think they'd look better if they were captured digitally. i know it's almost the cool thing to shoot film again... so old school... so vinyl. but i love the look of digital and i sure don't miss having dust spots on my images like you do in a few of them! and wait, what year did the braves actually win the world series? i know they made the playoffs like 13 years in a row, but i don't recall them actually winning the WS?

I'm always blown away when I see what can be done with film, especially this time when I'm able to see the digital images that were shot side by side. Well, I'm home from Kenya and back in the saddle. I shot Daniel and Mina's wedding on Saturday and it was amazing. Their wedding covered three incredible venues... The Biltmore Hotel, First Congregational Church of LA and Cicada Restaurant in the awesome Oviatt Building.

I'm getting ready to head to Manhattan for a few weeks tomorrow but I thought I'd post a few images for them before they leave for their honeymoon in Thailand and Hong Kong on Friday.

Here are some of my favorites from the wedding!

To say that Katia and David had an amazing wedding would be an understatement. From the incredible venue, Casa Del Mar, in Santa Monica, to the dream team of vendors including Carolyn Chen coordinating and Elysium Productions handling the videography, this wedding was a dream to shoot.

The day started out about as well as it could have. Its always nice to show up to Jimmy Choo's (the vintage collection) and a Reem Acra.

Yari and Edgar were married last month in one the most insane Cathedrals I've ever seen, St. Vincent's, right next to USC. After the ceremony we went and shot around downtown and finished up at MOMA. They had an AMAZING wedding coordinated by the incomparable Karli Tanner of Simply Mumtaz Events.

Here are a few of my favorites from the day!

This was my favorite part of the day... Edgar serenaded Yari with the help of the Mariachis.

Amazing wedding man! Beautiful church! It looks like you guys had a good time. I like the reflecting pond pics. What is the sculpture in a few of the shots that looks like a Cessna exploded??

I'm back. "Busy" just can't describe the way things have been over the past few months. I think about blogging everyday but haven't found the time to do it until now. Even now there are other things I should probably be doing but whatever.

Last week I had a client make a HUGE print order and every single one of the prints they wanted in sepia. I was a little disappointed at first because sepia's not really my favorite thing. Here and there its okay but not every single picture. I worked and worked on those images... trying to find a sepia that I liked. Well, I finally did, and now I love it.

I know this is a departure for me and I'm sure I'm going to get some slack for doing this but I just thought it was fun and had a great feel to it.

Anyway, here they are. Wei and Herman we're married way back in May... I know, I'm soooooo behind. The wedding was at the Ritz Carlton in Laguna Niguel, one of my favorite places.wh01.jpg wh02.jpg wh03.jpg wh04.jpg wh05.jpg wh06.jpg wh07.jpg wh08.jpg wh09.jpg wh10.jpg wh11.jpg
